High potential and gifted education
Kentucky Public School is distinguished by its commitment to individualised learning, placing a strong emphasis on continuous improvement and high expectations. Our school-wide systems and classroom practice align to the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy, which promotes engagement and challenge for every student in every school. Our staff are committed to providing all students with inclusive and supportive learning environments that support, challenge and extend all learners to empower them to become the best version of themselves.
Our staff recognise that students exhibit strengths in a variety of ways. By embracing a broad view of giftedness, we aim to foster excellence not only academically but also creatively, physically, and socially, preparing students for lifelong success and wellbeing.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
Our evidence informed classroom practices support students to build on their strengths and develop their areas for improvement. Our teaching programs are designed to identify and nurture giftedness across multiple domains, reflecting the Department’s emphasis on catering to the whole child.
Each student creates their own Student Success Plan. This documents the student's aspirational and semester goals, Success Meeting (Parent/Teacher/Student meeting) records and work samples that they are proud of. When students demonstrate high potential or giftedness in one or more areas, teachers create an Individual Learning Plan that details how students will be supported to continue to develop their strengths.
Students and teachers work together to identify and work towards next steps in learning, empowering students as leaders of their own learning. This approach supports the extension of high performing and gifted students in our classrooms.
In addition to our rich curriculum, our school provide a variety of strong co-curricula activities that supports to discover and develop their strengths in music, sports, healthy living and technology.
To extend high performing and gifted students our school offers a range of learning opportunities and activities, including:
Math Groups – targeted learning to individual and group learning needs. This provides students with opportunities for extension above their learning stage.
Writing Group – gifted writers engage in activities that develop their writing skills and abilities. These activities include creating school yearbooks and newsletters, creating advertisements and writing letters to community groups.
Student Leadership – Year 6 students are given the opportunity to decide on their leadership focus and are actively involved in the decision making for this area.
Interschool School Sport – Gifted athletes join a larger school to compete in the PSSA sport competitions. This provides students opportunities to develop and showcase their talents against others NSW public education students.
The Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) promotes whole-school participation in physical activity with leadership pathways and professional learning.
The Representative School Sport Pathway and PSSA events enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.
